The price of chocolate

Chocolate lovers, brace yourselves—your favourite treat is getting pricier, and it’s not just a blip.
Chocolate prices have soared, with cocoa costs quadrupling in the past year, peaking at £9,648 per tonne in April 24.

The reason? Climate change is taking a toll on cocoa farms in West Africa, where most of the world’s supply comes from. Drier weather has hit harvests hard, meaning less cocoa and, naturally, higher prices.

Our own bakery is feeling the impact, now paying over 4 times the price for the same weight in choc. “It’s really hard to manage,” says the bakery, adding that they may have to tweak recipes and are looking into reducing the amount of chocolate they use in their baked goodies.

The world’s love for chocolate isn’t fading, but for now, expect to pay a little more for your favourite treat.
