Seedy Sunday holds a special place in the hearts of Brighton and Hove residents who love green spaces and gardening. The annual event was founded back in 2001 to help people to grow healthy, successful crops and plants which will thrive in local growing conditions. It’s grown since then to embrace themes of enhancing nature and encouraging wildlife and biodiversity in our local area.
We have sponsored Seedy Sunday from the beginning!
So we sat down with Kate Harrison, (the current Chair of the Seedy Sunday organising committee) to find out more about this year’s event.
What’s different about Seedy Sunday this year?
One of the biggest changes this year is that Seedy Sunday is free!
This is partly because we are at the Brighton Open Market this year, but it also wouldn’t be possible without Infinity Foods’ generous sponsorship. (That made us smile)
The other big change is our relationship with the Brighton Open Market. We’re really working together as partners. They’re managing the booking of the stalls and bringing their magic to organising the event. They run regular markets, so they have the experience.
One of the other great things about being at Brighton Open Market is that many of their regular food stalls and cafes will be open on the day, such as Smorls Vegan Cafe and the Flying Saucer. (Yum)
What’s staying the same?
The giant seed swap remains at the heart of our event.
Unlike a lot of seed swaps, we open the event with thousands of packets of seeds. Huge variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers. We can only do this with your sponsorship! (Blush – thanks)
And the dedicated work of our Seedy Sunday committee working in the background. They save their own seeds and pack up the seeds we buy in bulk. People can come with their own seeds to swap, or they can donate 50p per packet of seeds.
Come early to get the best variety!
There will also be lots of familiar stalls – there will be seed potatoes for sale. Regular stallholders like Brighton and Hove Organic Gardening Group, Brighton Permaculture Trust, Berkson Bakes and Thomas Etty seeds, to name a few.
What else should people look out for?
We’re excited to be welcoming Infinity Foods as one of our speakers! Our series of talks run throughout the day.
I think this is the first time we’ve had you as a speaker! (Yes it is!)
I’m excited to hear George Sauverin from Infinity in conversation with Rosa Farber and Toos Jeuken from Laines Organic Farm.
They farm biodynamically and organically, and I’m interested to hear about their methods. The talks are £3 each to cover costs.

What do you love most about Seedy Sunday?
I enjoy so much about the event.
It keeps me in touch with the seasons, and feels like the start of the gardening year.
But I think it’s the volunteers I love most. They’re so enthusiastic and full of welcoming wisdom for new gardeners. They love the event too – and their gift of an Infinity Foods goody bag!
