Due to a difficult harvest in both Scandinavian and the UK the Price of oats has gone up significantly! Prolonged wet weather resulted in a decrease in both quality and quantity of mill-grade Oats, combined with the lower value of sterling, this has pushed the price up.
So do not be alarmed when you notice that your bowl of porridge seems a little more expensive than usual.
Alternatively why not try millet porridge. Millet is a great source of fibre, magnesium, calcium and B vitamins.
1⁄2cup of your favourite plant based milk
sprinkling of ground cinnamon
1pinch of salt
2tablespoons of your favourite dried fruit
maple syrup to taste
In a small saucepan, combine millet, water, milk, cinnamon, salt and dried fruit.
- Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 25 minutes without stirring.
- If the liquid is not completely absorbed, cook for 3-5 minutes longer, partially covered.
- Remove from heat.
- Drizzle with maple syrup.
you could try Buckwheat, or even quinoa porridge, how about a puffed quinoa flapjack or energy bar!
Good news! the coming season of Brazil nut harvests look like they should be getting back to the normal levels from previous years. This should mean the price will come back down in the next few months from the record high of 2017.
