2018 International Day of Cooperatives

By: George Sauverin

2018 international day of cooperatives is led by the United Nations and end Cooperative fortnight on the 7th of July.  That’s a lot of cooperation!

Cooperatives have sustainability in their DNA, with ‘concern for the community’ as the seventh of their guiding principles. That is why this year we are celebrating the great work that Cooperatives like ourselves do throughout the world, to enriching people’s lives and the communities they reside in!

The theme for 2018 is “Sustainable consumption and production”; to show how cooperatives run successful businesses while respecting our natural environment and the resources it offers. A title which beautifully ties in with the heart of Infinity and many of the projects we have worked on so hard over the last months! We now have water refills again, many products from water bottles to lunchboxes and cotton fruit and veg bags.

Cooperatives with their values, principles and governance structures have sustainability at their core and are different from other economic models in that they do not exploit the planet’s limits.

Cooperatives have been shaping the land, community, and society for the better for centuries now! Agricultural cooperatives work to maintain the longevity of the land where they grow crops through sustainable farming practices. Consumer cooperatives (like Infinity Foods) support sustainable sourcing for their products and educate consumers about responsible consumption. Housing cooperatives help ensure safe dwellings. Utility cooperatives are engaged in the transition to cleaner electricity and rural access to energy and water. Worker and social cooperatives aim to provide goods and services in an efficient, planet-friendly way while creating long-term, sustainable jobs (Also just like us)!
